Make poetry reading accessible with graphic organizers! These organizers for poetry analysis, discussion stems, annotation guide, and journal prompts are versatile enough to be used with any poem, and are based on strategies that work for poetry reading and analysis.
The following organizers are provided for print (PDF) and in Google Slides:
TPCASTT
- Students will start and end by thinking about the significance of the poem’s title. In-between, they will paraphrase the poem, think about connotations, attitude, shifts, and theme.
Gist
- Students will chunk the poem and write one-sentence summaries of each section as they read. In the end, they will bring these sentences together to write a comprehensive summary of the poem.
Synthesis
- This organizer is perfect for comparing two or more poems. Students will write down connections they notice. If they wish, they may write about contrasts outside of the bubbles.
Choose One & Argue
- Students are asked to choose one important detail from each stanza (or section) of the poem. Then, they must select the most important detail overall and defend their choice.
Questioning
- Students are asked to think of discussion-worthy questions in response to the poem. If you wish, you may have students answer some of their own questions on the back of the organizer (or in the speaker notes section of the Google Slide). This organizer goes perfectly with the discussion stems organizer – between the two, students should have a lot to talk about.
