Gamify close reading skills by using these connotation and denotation task cards that will reinforce critical thinking and vocabulary skills. Students must think about the connotation and denotation of words while utilizing vocabulary, reading, analysis, and persuasive speaking skills.

The activity: students will rank lists of words from most positive to most negative.

An answer key is given for ease of use; however, some students may find that they disagree with the answers – this is actually a teachable opportunity to discuss the role age, gender, ethnicity, etc. play in influencing connotations.

⇒60 different word sets (32 Pages) so that students have plenty of opportunities to practice! Two versions are included so that you can differentiate for the needs of all learners. The basic version contains three words per card and care has been taken to eliminate the most challenging vocabulary, while the advanced version contains five words per card that are more challenging and nuanced, making them more difficult to rank.

⇒Suggested answers for each word set (32 Pages) to make this a no-prep resource. Some students may find that they disagree with the answers – this is actually a teachable opportunity to discuss the role age, gender, ethnicity, etc. play in influencing connotations!
